What this is
The problem
Warehouse throughput is set by walking distance, and walking distance is set by slotting: where each SKU physically sits. Most layouts were optimised once, for an order mix that has since changed.
Where the current approach strains
Re-slotting is disruptive, so it happens rarely, so the layout drifts further from optimal. Slotting, picking, labour allocation and replenishment are coupled — optimising any one in isolation moves the bottleneck rather than removing it.
What we are exploring
Joint optimisation across slotting, picking routes and labour, formulated so that the coupling is represented rather than assumed away.
What would have to be true
A simulation against real order history showing throughput gain net of re-slotting cost. The net is the whole question — a gain that costs more to realise than it returns is not a gain.
