What this is
The problem
Last mile is the most expensive segment and the least controllable. Failed deliveries, narrow time windows, urban access rules and customer priority all compound in the final few kilometres.
Where the current approach strains
Optimising for distance produces routes that miss time windows. Optimising for time windows produces routes that burn fuel. Optimising for both produces a problem that is genuinely hard, and most systems resolve it with heuristics tuned by whoever set them up years ago.
What we are exploring
Multi-objective formulations for dispatch and vehicle routing that carry delivery windows, energy and customer priority together, rather than optimising one and constraining the rest.
What would have to be true
A stated objective weighting the operator agrees with before the run — because a multi-objective result can be made to look good by choosing the weights afterwards, and that is not a result.
