What this is

The problem

Stimuli-responsive polymers change shape, stiffness or permeability in response to heat, light, pH or an electric field. Designing one to respond in a specific way, at a specific threshold, is largely iterative.

Where the current approach strains

The behaviour emerges from molecular self-assembly and phase transitions — collective effects that are hard to predict from the monomer alone. Simulation at the necessary scale and fidelity is expensive.

What we are exploring

Molecular self-assembly and phase-transition modelling, with attention to the transition threshold specifically, since that is the property a designer most needs to control.

What would have to be true

A validated prediction of a transition threshold for a polymer whose real threshold is known and was withheld from the model. Until that exists, this is a direction rather than a method.
